Frequently asked
The chart is empty — why?
HappensNightly visualizes data that's already in Apple Health. If the Health app on your iPhone has no sleep records, the chart will be empty. Sleep records come from:
- Apple Watch (if you wear it to bed and have Sleep enabled)
- iPhone's built-in Sleep schedule (Health → Browse → Sleep)
- Third-party sleep apps (AutoSleep, Sleep Cycle, Pillow, etc.)
Once you have at least one night of sleep data in Apple Health, pull down on the Sleep tab to refresh.
I granted HealthKit access but still see "Access denied".
For privacy reasons, Apple intentionally doesn't tell apps when you've granted read access — only write access. HappensNightly assumes access was granted and tries to load anyway. If you see an error, try:
- iPhone Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices → HappensNightly → make sure the Sleep toggle is on.
- Close and reopen HappensNightly.
How do I move my journal to a new iPhone?
HappensNightly's journal stays on-device — it doesn't sync to iCloud. To move it:
- On the old iPhone: Settings → Journal Data → Export Journal. Save the JSON file to Files, AirDrop, or email.
- On the new iPhone: install HappensNightly, then Settings → Journal Data → Import Journal and pick the file.
Your Apple Health sleep data syncs automatically via iCloud — only the journal needs the export/import.
Bedtime reminders aren't firing.
Check that notifications are allowed:
- iPhone Settings → Notifications → HappensNightly → Allow Notifications is on.
- Open HappensNightly → Settings → Bedtime Reminder → toggle is on, and the lead time (10/30/60 min) is selected.
- Focus modes can silence reminders — check Settings → Focus → make sure HappensNightly is allowed in active focus modes.
One night shows an impossibly long duration (e.g. 20+ hours).
This usually means multiple sources (Apple Watch + a third-party sleep app) wrote overlapping records for the same night. HappensNightly merges overlapping intervals — if you still see odd numbers, check the Health app: Browse → Sleep → Show All Data and look for duplicate or incorrect entries.
Why doesn't the app sync between my devices?
HealthKit sleep data syncs automatically via iCloud Health, so the chart looks identical across devices signed into the same Apple ID. Journal entries — sleep quality, workouts, caffeine, notes — are stored locally for privacy and do not sync. Use Export/Import to move them.
Does HappensNightly write data to Apple Health?
No. HappensNightly requests read-only access. It can see your data but cannot add, change, or delete anything in Apple Health.
How far back does the chart go?
The Sleep Chart loads the last 3 years of HealthKit data on launch. Use the 2W / 1M / 3M selector and the date picker to navigate. Tap the date pill to jump to any month with data.
Is there an Android version?
No. HappensNightly is built on Apple HealthKit, which is iOS-only. There are no plans for an Android version.
How do I delete my data?
Uninstalling HappensNightly removes the journal completely — there's no cloud copy. Your Apple Health data is unaffected by uninstalling, since that lives in the Health app, not in HappensNightly.
